Why not buy from a very well respected store to make the whole process easier? (As an aside, buying gold is really easy and there is no reason to be intimidated at all.) Now, let's say you have bought gold at least one time before. You're a more seasoned gold investor. Then, it's time to consider buying gold and silver investments on Ebay. For most of history, coins were valued based on the precious metal they contain. Whether a coin is made by who it appears to be was of secondary importance compared to whether it contains the correct amount of metal, that is, right weight and fineness. Genuine appearance was simply a convenient shortcut to avoid time-consuming tests in everyday transactions.

Metal and water do not go well together! Almost everyone intuitively knows to keep their coins from getting wet but many collectors do not realize that even the moisture present in the air (humidity) can be enough to cause damage. Silica gel absorbs moisture that makes its way inside your safe deposit box, safe or other storage area preventing it from reaching your coins and causing damage. Silica gel can be easily reactivated in the oven when it has absorbed as much moisture as it can hold. Before shopping for silica gel, measure the size of the area to be protected and then buy the appropriate size of silica gel for storage space.

An added benefit of your gold investment is it will hedge you against inflation, the savers worst nightmare. Inflation means the dollars you have saved for your down payment are worth less each day. As inflation rises, however, gold will appreciate in value to help counteract the lower value of your dollars. This is very similar to how oil stocks provide a hedge against higher gasoline prices. This is a more advanced investment topic and should not be your primary concern but is worth consideration. If you're only buying one coin, it's not going to provide a huge amount of insurance against inflation but it's nice to know you have some protection. Most importantly, it's a great feeling to know that luck is on your side. Buy a gold coin and you will start noticing good things happening in your life. Buy a gold coin and you will quickly save enough money for your mortgage down payment on the home of your dreams.
You can buy silver dollars as a great investment.

Bullish investors may choose to leverage their position by borrowing money against their existing gold assets and then purchasing more gold on account with the loaned funds. In order to keep the cost of debt to a minimum, these individuals would normally seek a loan in the currency with the lowest borrowing rate, which, as of April 2006, was the Japanese yen. This technique is referred to as a "yen-gold carry trade". Leverage may increase investment gains but increases risk, as, if the gold price decreases, the investor may be subject to a margin call. Leverage is also an integral part of buying gold derivatives and unhedged gold mining company shares.

There are two interesting subtypes of prooflike coins that the collector should be aware of. The first are coins that are Deep Mirror Prooflike. These are coins with especially reflective surfaces and a look that can be deceptively similar to that of a Proof. As an example, there are certain gold dollars from the 1880's that are extremely hard to tell apart from Proofs. Generally speaking, many of the gold coins that are designated as Deep Mirror Prooflike by NGC command strong premiums, especially for issues that are generally seen with frosty or satiny surfaces.

In general, gold becomes more desirable in times of bank failures. When dollars were fully convertible into gold, both were regarded as money. However, most people preferred to carry around paper banknotes rather than the somewhat heavier and less divisible gold coins. If people feared their bank would fail, a bank run might have been the result. This is what happened in the USA during the Great Depression of the 1930s, leading President Roosevelt to impose a national emergency and to outlaw the holding of gold by US citizens then known as Executive Order 6102 which has since been ended.

Number One on my avoid list is the TV shopping show dealers and premium "Mints" out there that sell nice looking commemorative coins for premium prices, but that have no value beyond their bullion (if they have any) when you must eventually sell them. Some of these "Mints" sell on the TV and cable-based shopping channels, and the prices they charge when they do sell genuine U.S. Mint coins are nearly always several times higher than the price the coins would cost from a normal coin dealer! These shows rarely sell anything that can't be acquired elsewhere more cheaply, so don't impulse buy from these shows! Do a little research and you'll see the same Silver Eagles at $2 over spot price from major traditional coin dealers. Most of the Uncirculated Morgan Dollars I've seen TV shopping show dealers sell for $300 each can be purchased from a normal coin dealer for $30. Never buy coins from TV shopping shows!
